Day 1: Moab – Sunset at Delicate Arch

Welcome to Utah! Upon arrival in Moab (CNY), you will be greeted at the airport by your trip leader who will pick you up in our transportation for the weekend. We won’t waste any time today as we drop our luggage and throw on a day pack to hit the trails at Arches National Park. It’s just a short drive from Moab and what a better way to start our trip than watching the sunset at the park’s most iconic landmark, Delicate Arch. This picturesque formation is one of the most famous geologic structures in the world. It has graced Utah license plates since 1996.  The opening below the arch is 46 feet high, making this the largest free-standing arch in Arches National Park.

This evening, we’ll make a stop at the store to pick up some snacks and a picnic lunch for the trails and then try a local restaurant in Moab to get to know your fellow travelers.

Day 2: Hiking in Canyonlands National Park – Island In the Sky District

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll lace up our hiking boots and head to Canyonlands National Park. A short hike (0.7 miles) takes us to Mesa Arch, which is a classic sunrise spot and is popular among photographers.

Canyonlands National Park is a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Rivers divide the park into four districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the rivers themselves. These areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, but each offers different opportunities for sightseeing and adventure.

The Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands is a vast mesa that sits upon sheer sandstone cliffs more than 1,000 feet above its surrounding territory. With many overlooks, each showcasing a different panorama of Canyonlands’ magnificent landscape, a broad range of great hikes, and its easy accessibility, it’s clear why Island in the Sky is the most visited section of Canyonlands National Park.

After watching the sunrise at Mesa Arch, we’ll next challenge ourselves with a moderate hike to Neck Spring, where hikers travel past seep springs, historic ranching sites, and an assortment of plant life. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch at the Upheaval Dome trailhead, where we’ll also find restrooms and picnic tables. After lunch, a quick and moderate hike will take you to the viewpoints of the fantastic Upheaval Dome and then we’ll head south to Grand View Point – an easy hike along the edge of the canyon to the end of the mesa where incredible panoramic views await! Finish off the day watching the sunset from the Green River Overlook – a view like no other.

Day 3: Hiking in Arches National Park

Arches National Park contains a variety of hiking trails to discover a landscape of contrasting colors, landforms, and textures unlike any other in the world. The park has over 2,000 natural stone arches, in addition to hundreds of soaring pinnacles, massive fins and giant balanced rocks. This red-rock wonderland will amaze you with its formations, refresh you with its trails, and inspire you with its sunsets.

The Devi’s Garden Loop Trail has all of the ingredients for a perfect hike in Arches National Park. This 7.8 mile (1,131 ft elevation gain) heavily trafficked loop trail allows you to see seven natural arches. The main trail is well maintained and wide. The first spur trail takes you to Tunnel Arch and Pine Tree Arch.

The trail then leads to Landscape Arch, which at 306’ long is one of the largest natural spans in the world. After visiting Landscape Arch, you begin your only significant uphill climb of the trip. You will walk well below what used to be Wall Arch, then climb higher to spur trails to Navajo and Partition Arch.  We’ll continue for an additional 2 ¼ miles for views of Double Arch and Dark Angel.

Devil’s Garden Loop Trail: 7.8 mi/ 1,131 ft elevation gain/ Loop/ Est 3.5 hours

We highly recommend training prior to your adventure. You should be training on rough and rugged terrain – not perfectly paved sidewalks. If that’s not possible, find steps, a hill, or the StairMaster and get to climbing!

Also, don’t show up with brand new hiking boots or shoes. You should be spending some time in your shoes leading up to your adventure to break them in. Better to suffer blisters at home than to miss out on a hike due to painful hot spots on your feet.
