Is this trip right for you?

  • This trip includes many hikes ranging from easy to difficult as well as a half day of canyoneering and a half day of rafting on the Colorado River.
  • We’ll be staying in a vacation rental, which means there may be some beds to be shared as well as common areas. While we always try to make sure everyone has their own bed, unless requested otherwise, this isn’t always possible.
  • We will use a 12-passenger vehicle for travel into all of the parks and to the hiking trailheads.

Moab

Today we will arrive in Moab, gateway to massive red rock formations in Arches National Park and mesas and buttes carved by the Green and Colorado rivers in Canyonlands National Park. SkyWest/United Airlines are providing daily flight between Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY) and Denver, CO (DEN). Upon arrival, we will take a taxi, Uber or Lyft to our vacation rental and I’ll go pick up the van which we’ll use for the duration of our trip. We’ll then go to the grocery store to pick up supplies for our stay.

Canyonlands National Park/ Dead Horse Point State Park (B, L)

Today, we’ll drive to Canyonlands National Park for a full day of hiking and exploring a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Rivers divide the park into four districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the rivers themselves.

First, we’ll make a stop at Dead Horse Point State Park, located high on the rim of the Colorado River Canyon and offering some of the most spectacular views in the area. Here, we’ll hike the Dead Horse Rim Loop Trail (5-mile; 908 ft elevation gain; loop).

Next, we’ll go next door to explore the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park.  First, we’ll try to find the False Kiva Trail (1.9 miles; 449 ft elevation gain; out & back), which is not found on the park map but is a short, yet spectacular trail that takes you to False Kiva, a human-made stone circle situated perfectly at a natural alcove. The trail is not well maintained and involves some scrambling, but you will be rewarded with amazing views that capture the spirit of the Southwest. Falso Kiva is a Class II archeological site.

We’ll end the day at the Mesa Arch, where we’ll watch the sunset over the sandstone cliffs. This trail is an easy .6 mile heavily trafficked loop that features beautiful flowers and is good for all skill levels.

This is a wonderful hike that allows you to see up to six natural arches. The main trail is well maintained, and wide. The first spur trail takes you to Tunnel Arch and Pine Tree Arch.

The trail then leads to Landscape Arch, which at 306′ long is one of the largest natural spans in the world. After visiting Landscape Arch, we’ll begin our only significant uphill climb of the day. We’ll walk well below Wall Arch, then climb higher to spur trails to Navajo and Partition Arch. At this point, we’ll retrace the main trail back to the trailhead or continue on for an additional 2 1/4 miles for views of Double Arch and Dark Angel.
